Beyond the Usual Routes

Prambanan and Malioboro are undeniably great, but Yogyakarta holds many places untouched by mass tourism. Here are some hidden gems worth adding to your itinerary.

1. Bukit Panguk Kediwung

This hill in the Dlingo area of Bantul offers a sea of clouds on misty mornings. At around 400 meters above sea level and surrounded by pine forests, it's perfect for camping or simply enjoying the dawn. Entrance fees are very affordable.

2. Gua Pindul

Cave tubing on an underground river flowing past stalactites and stalagmites in a pristine cave. Located in Gunungkidul, this experience is unlike typical cave tourism — you float on an inner tube through an underground river for about 45 minutes.

3. Pantai Timang

A beach at the far west of Gunungkidul with a traditional gondola crossing steep cliffs to a small rocky island in the middle of the ocean. The waves are large and dramatic — this is not a beach for swimming, but for standing in awe at the cliff's edge.

4. Kampung Cyber

A small village near Taman Sari that has become a famous mural kampung. Almost every wall corner is decorated with colorful murals. An interesting spot for street photography and seeing organically grown community art.

5. Teletubbies Hill

A vast rolling meadow on the slopes of Merapi that resembles the backdrop of the Teletubbies TV show. Popular among local photographers but still relatively quiet from outside visitors.

6. Mangunan Fruit Garden

A fruit garden spanning hundreds of hectares in the Dlingo area, also offering a panorama of the Oyo River from a height. During fruit season, visitors can pick directly from the trees.

7. Candi Ijo

A Hindu temple standing on the highest hill in the Prambanan area — at 410 meters above sea level. Besides the well-maintained temple complex, the view of the Yogyakarta plains from here in the afternoon is truly breathtaking, and far less crowded than Prambanan.

Tips for Visiting Hidden Gems

  • Arrive early — most of the best spots are quiet before 7:00 AM
  • Use offline Google Maps for areas with weak internet signal
  • Bring cash — many of these spots don't accept digital payments yet
  • Wear comfortable shoes — some locations require a short trek
