"Built during the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, Plengkung Wijilan was part of a series of fortified gates protecting the southern entrance to the Kraton. The distinctive arched design was engineered to slow approaching cavalry while allowing foot traffic to pass freely. Today, passing through these ancient gates transports visitors into the bustling gudeg food stalls that have lined the street for generations."
